Frequently Asked Questions

Two hours of womens-only pick up basketball every week in Oakland, CA.

What’s a run like?

Runs start with various players stretching and shooting around. 10 minutes in, we will circle up as a group and discuss rules and split into even teams. You’ll get in roughly 10-13 pick up games in a typical Pick Her Up run. No matter the amount of players in a run, we have perfected a rotation system that keeps games competitive and fun for all teams, while making sure we get those much-needed breaks too. We squeeze in games until the final minute of our run. Sometimes after games, we have off court events and gatherings too.

When does this happen?

Every Sunday, 9-11am — year round.

Who is welcome?

We are a women-centered organization. Our space is open to all cis and trans women and anyone with lived experience of misogyny. If you have any questions about if this space is for you, please do not hesitate to reach out to us on our contact page

Where do you play?

Currently we are playing indoors at a facility in Oakland. When you’re on our email list and sign up to for a particular Sunday run, you’ll be notified of the exact location & parking details as soon as you pay for your spot.

Frequently Asked Questions

What levels come and play?

Players have a range of experience from high school level to oversees professionals. Whether you hoop regularly and are trying to fine tune your game or stay in shape, or if you haven’t touched a ball in 10+ years, this is a place for you.

But, really, how will my skills match up to the rest?

If you are hesitant, we welcome you to come to a run and watch from the side. Beginner players often start this way. Be sure to introduce yourself to our PHU leaders and they will help introduce you to our community. You can learn a lot about basketball from watching, and when you’re ready, start with being a good defender and ask your teammates how you can be helpful in setting screens for more advanced players :) In no time, you’ll fit right in with the broad range of talent who come to PHU for more than just basketball.

We do require all players who want to get on the court to have purchased a ticket beforehand. If you are visiting as a spectator and there are tickets still available on our website (i.e. you dont see a “sold out” sign on the date you’re looking to buy for), you’re welcome to purchase one while at a run spontaneously and hop on the court. If the run is sold out though, we ask that you remain a spectator and come back next Sunday with a purchased ticket.

How old are the players?

One of our favorite parts about our community is its diversity, and that includes age as well. While the majority of our players are 25-40 years old, we welcome players as young as 14 years old and as wise as 55.

How do you make the teams?

10 minutes into our starting time, all players circle up to connect, go over rules, announce upcoming community events, and break into teams. We attempt to make the most even teams as we can in a randomized way and do not take requests for pairing up with certain other players.

How much does it cost?

Our entry fee is $10 per player.  Each week we post the upcoming run on our Sign Up page. We accept all credit cards.

What is your refund policy?

Due to high gym costs and limited player spots, we are not able to accommodate refunds. Once you purchase a spot for a given run, no matter the reason you cannot make it, we are not able to refund you or allow for that spot to be transferred to another date. Thank you for understanding.

What happens if a run is canceled?

If we ever cancel a run, we communicate out on all our social media channels and email list. Sign up to be on our email list here

Can I bring a spectator?

Yes! We welcome loved ones to sit on the side to watch. Spectators do not have to pay the entry fee. Please have them check in with one of the leaders of our run. We ask that all spectators abide by all PHU rules and regulations, ensuring that PHU remains a safe place for women to play.

Can outside media come check it out?

If you are interested in checking out what we do at PHU, please send us an email info@pickherupball.com and we will be happy to discuss our media policies with you and set up a time to connect.
